Job Description


The Office of Design is looking to hire a Design Technician that will be part of our Methods Section. This team is responsible for the development and revisions to the Design Manual, standard details, and typical drawings used in the highway development process and highway construction plan development. This position performs technical engineering drafting and design for a broad scope of technical elements relating to highway improvement projects that will be used to enhance the state and national transportation systems in Iowa. Having an understanding of the principals of highway design will be a benefit.

Typical Responsibilities:

Participates on a team that makes decisions that effectively balance highway design goals.
Prepares standard road plans, typical drawings and Design Manual Sections.
Researches impacts of proposed modifications and improvements.
Develops roadway details using MicroStation and/or other appropriate software.
Ensures that all decisions regarding detail modification are appropriately documented.
Creates and updates electronic files to comply with current automation standards.
Updates website documents and webpages.

Job Requirements


Graduation from high school or GED and experience equal to six years of full-time work experience in design drafting, cartography, engineering survey, soils survey, land survey, construction inspection or photogrammetry;

OR
an equivalent combination of education and experience, substituting one year (thirty semester hours of its equivalent) of post high school education for each year of the required experience to a maximum substitution of two years;
OR
substitution of one year (thirty semester hours or its equivalent) of vocational technical school education in engineering technology, design drafting, or cartography for two years of the required experience to a maximum substitution of two years;
OR
substitution of experience in engineering survey, soils survey or construction inspection for each year of the required design drafting experience to a maximum substitution of two years;
OR
employees with current continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes experience equal to twenty-four months of full-time work as a Design Technician Associate.
