This design technician specialist position is part of the team responsible for providing topographic data for use in the development of highway improvement projects on the primary road and interstate systems. The individual in this position is responsible for providing training and support on computer applications as they relate to the various surveying efforts at the IDOT. This individual is responsible for checking and preparing completed field survey data for use by the design teams or for further data gathering by the photogrammetric team.
The efforts of this individual will include standardizing data collection procedures, data formatting, data transfer, and software applications relating to both conveying existing ground feature information and proposed highway design information. The services of this individual will be provided to the following customers; preliminary survey crews, construction survey crews, district ROW survey crews, and survey consultants under contract by the Office of Design. These services will be provided by developing standardized procedures, developing and managing a central web-based library of survey information, conducting training, and working with survey crews in the field.
Applicants must have experience and/or knowledge of the following:
Using survey instruments including electronic total stations, global positioning equipment, and data collectors.
Survey feature and linking codes.
Using MicroStation and GEOPAK software and experience with GEOPAK Survey software is preferred.
Ability to create and manipulate alignments, data collection files, and DTMs of both existing topographic data and proposed highway improvements.
Knowledge of surveying principals and techniques including; datum's, control networks, coordinate systems, digital terrain models (DTMs), photo control, and horizontal & vertical geometry.
Knowledge of the operation of survey instruments including: total stations, data collectors, levels, and GPS receivers.
Ability to correctly interpret and utilize highway engineering plans and specifications as they relate to engineering survey.
Displays a high level of initiative, effort, and commitment towards completing assignments efficiently.
This positon will possess a FAA small UAS (unmanned aircraft system) part 107 certification or have the ability to obtain this certification with 6 months of hire.
Shift: Days, Monday through Friday with some overnight travel required.
Minimum Qualification Requirements
Graduation from high school or GED and eight years of full-time experience in design drafting, cartography, photogrammetry or right of way;
an equivalent combination of one year experience in engineering survey, soils survey, land survey or construction inspection for each year of the required design drafting experience to a maximum substitution of two years;
an equivalent combination of education and experience, substituting thirty semester hours of post high school education for each year of the required experience to a maximum substitution of two years;
an equivalent combination of education and experience, substituting thirty semester hours of vocational technical school in engineering technology, design drafting, or cartography for two years of the required experience to a maximum substitution of two years;
employees with current continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes experience equal to one year of full time work as a Design Technician.
